The US Embassy and Palestinian Issue raised to a new level
Pakistan’s indifference to the massacre of Palestinians on the eve of the opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem is heart-wrenching. Being a flag-bearer of the Palestinian cause, Pakistan is supposed to raise its voice through diplomatic channels to make Israel realize that it will not be allowed to tread over the innocent Palestinians.
Pakistan never established relations with Israel because the former is a staunch opponent of the illegal and forceful occupation of Palestine. It must oppose the killing of Palestinians with the same fervour.
Muslim states are a picture of haplessness and disgrace. They are not even paying the lip-service on the carnage in which 60 Palestinians lost their lives and thousands are wounded. Saudi Arabia and Gulf countries are as silent as grave.
This is nothing less than criminal negligence. They condone it, but reluctant to protest. They fear about their relations with Israel. Therefore, the latter cannot be offended.
Only Turkey had the courage to openly condemn the brutality unleashed on innocent people. Although it fell on deaf ears, Turkey lamented and denounced cold-blooded murders.
The Great March of Return movement culminates on Tuesday, 15 May, which marks what Palestinians call the Nakba, when hundreds of thousands were forced out of their homes or fled amid the fighting that accompanied the creation in 1948 of the state of Israel after the end of the British Mandate.
Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel acted in self-defense in by firing at protesters on the border.
“Every country has an obligation to defend its borders,” Netanyahu wrote on Twitter. “The Hamas terrorist organisation declares it intends to destroy Israel and sends thousands to breach the border fence in order to achieve this goal. We will continue to act with determination to protect our sovereignty and citizens.”
